Karl Marx, Dos Kapital, first Yiddish translation

-------------------------------------------------

Y. A. Merison or J.A. Maryson (Yankev-Avrom Yerukhimovitsh) was an anarchist physician. He was born on May 6, 1866 near Vilna, to a rabbinical family. He immigrated in 1887 to the United States and earned a medical degree in New York. He took the name Dr. Jacob Merison or Dr. J.A. Maryson and joined the Pioneers of Freedom, the first Jewish American anarchist group. One of the leading anarchists in New York, he co-edited the anarchists' Yiddish newspapers “Varhayt” and “Fraye Arbeter Shtime”, wrote „Principles of Anarchism“, „The Theory and Practice of Anarchism“ and translated works from Peter Kropotkin, Charles Darwin, John Stuart Mill, Max Stirner and others into Yiddish. He died in 1941.

During the First World War Y. A. Merison translated the first volume of Karl Marx’s „Das Kapital“ from Karl Kautsky’s „Volksausgabe“ (1914) and with biographic sketch of Karl Marx. The book was published in three volumes by the anarchist publishing house of the Kropotkin Literary Society, founded in New York for the 70th birthday of the Russian anarchist Peter Kropotkin (1842-1921).

„Although Kropotkin never returned to he New World, his influence continued to make itself felt (...) and a Kropotkin Literary Society was organized by Jewish anarchists to publish anarchist and socialist classics, some by Kropotkin himself“ (Paul Avrich, “Anarchist Portraits”, Princeton University Press, 1988, p. 104). “The executive committee of the Kropotkin Literary Society consisted of Benjamin Axler, David Isakovitz, myself, Volinksy, Hillel Solotaroff, J.A. Maryson, Max Maisel, Sam Margolis, and two or three others.” (David Babic, interviewed by Paul Avrich in “Anarchist Voices: An Oral History of Anarchism in America”, Princeton University Press, 1995, p. 364
